26.2 miles, in the bag...

done and done!!!

The San Diego Rock n' Roll Marathon turned out to be a total success!  We all ran long and finished strong, reaching each of our personal goals and having fun all the while.  The climate in San Diego, CA is totaly conducive for running, but that Cali sun is powerful.  We're all a bit blackened and tan!!

The race kicked off at 6:30 am, 65 degrees F, with 24,000 runners officially registered and rearing to go.  It was slow moving to the starting line, but once there the pace sped up within the wide San Diego streets.  It was amazing to see the diversity of people running that day, from teenagers to grandparents, and hear some of the stories of recovery and determination.  One woman had had a complete hip replacement only months earlier.  Another man had recently recovered from lukemia.  Thousands of

spectators and volunteers were there to support us and were extremely motivating and encouraging.

It made me quite emotional at times, and I realized that the marathon is so much more than some crazy long run.  It's the celebratory culmination of months, maybe even years, of hard work and sacrifice, mental and physical trials.  The marathon itself is not the hardest part, it's all the preparation and pain that went into it that really counts.  It's also an opportunity for people to come together and share something they love.  Running is often a solitary sport and these events provide an opportunity to share that love in camaraderie.

Being a celebration, people were dressed in all types of crazy costumes.  There were running Elvises, runners with no shoes, cross dressers, and even a guy scantily clad in a pink speedo, it was wild!  There were also groups of cheerleaders and 45 live bands, it really kept us going.

Races like these are also a wonderful way for people like you and me to rally support for great causes.  Thanks to your donations we were able to raise $1,000 for Amigos de Bolivia y Peru's Kantuta fund and $1,000 for the Girls Gotta Run Foundation!  You should feel good about yourself!
